Description

Acharya Prashant explains that the mind does not fear change itself, but rather it is afraid that it will lose what it has. If the mind were to know that it would get something more valuable as a result of change, it would welcome it. The mind's problem is that it has acquired things from the outside, such as money, relationships, respect, and the body, over which it has no control. All of these are subject to disappearance in time. Money can be lost, respect can be withdrawn by others, and the body will eventually perish. The speaker states that this is the reason the mind is afraid. The mind's content, which constitutes its very existence and identity, is borrowed content. When one is living on borrowed content, there is a fear that it will be taken away. The mind resists change because it thinks it will be impoverished. It fears losing its respectability, security, and past accomplishments. However, the mind will not resist change if it is told that if its current content goes away, something more valuable is waiting for it. To become fearless, the mind must come upon that which cannot be taken away. When this happens, the mind will welcome and play with change, and one becomes a fearless mover. The more a person is dependent on their external acquisitions, the more afraid their life will be. Those who pride themselves on their status, position, and respectability will be deeply afraid people. The only fearless person is the one who does not draw sustenance from others and situations but has it within themselves. This fearlessness comes from realizing that even if everything is taken away, what is truly valuable will remain. When one lives in this realization, they are not afraid.
