Description

Acharya Prashant addresses a question about working a dishonest corporate job when one feels there is no other option. He begins by stating that if one wants a pure answer, it is that there is always an option; it is never the case that there is no alternative. He explains that if a person chooses not to select an alternative, it is their own decision. One goes to the office of their own will because they are getting some benefit from it. Simultaneously, from the questioner's own words, it is clear that they are also suffering some loss, such as restlessness and the pain of earning a dishonest living. The speaker points out that the questioner has already made a calculation that the benefit is greater than the loss, which is why they continue. In that case, the deal is already in their favor, so why ask the question? Conversely, if the deal is a loss, what sane person would keep making a losing deal every day? The speaker asserts that no one is truly helpless or compelled; it is a choice. The perceived benefits include financial and mental security, and avoiding domestic pressure or the uncertainty of a new path. He says that to even suggest one is helpless is something he cannot accept. However, respecting the perspective from which the question is asked, he offers advice. If one feels trapped, the only way to find even a little peace is to work for freedom. The honest and pure truth is that one is not trapped; being trapped is a choice. But if one assumes they are truly trapped, then their only duty is to constantly strive to cut their bonds. This is the only work that can bring peace. He warns against the kind of spirituality that teaches one to be free wherever they are, as this makes a person comfortable in their bondage for life. Instead, if one must remain in a dishonest job for some time, they should constantly remind themselves that they are trapped and suffering. They should not even allow a smile on their lips, and if they do laugh, it should be at their own predicament. One must strip themselves of the right to be happy in such a situation. Recounting his own time in the corporate world, he says he was not sad or serious, but 'intense'—burning from within like a focused laser, with all his energy concentrated on melting his chains. The only way is to either get free in one stroke or, if one must stay, to use that time to constantly struggle for freedom. Be physically present at the office, but let your heart be elsewhere, and let the office constantly remind you that it is your cage.
