Description

Acharya Prashant explains that in Vedanta, everything is considered one's own, and the world has no existence separate from the individual. He clarifies that while one must work within the world to untie their internal knots, the ultimate goal is the healing of one's own suffering rather than worldly achievement. He describes the hierarchy of reality where the Self is the truth, the ego is its first shadow, and the world is the shadow of that shadow. Since suffering is experienced by the ego, the work must be done on the ego, using the world as a necessary field of action to move toward the Self. He emphasizes that internal change naturally leads to external improvement, whereas social activism without self-realization is often ineffective because it ignores the root cause of worldly corruption: the ego. Addressing the concept of selfishness, Acharya Prashant asserts that everyone is inherently selfish because the Self is all there is. The distinction lies not between being selfish or selfless, but between being an 'ignorant' selfish person and a 'wise' selfish person. An ignorant person pursues worldly acquisitions without knowing their true nature, leading to destruction, while a wise person understands their true interest lies in spiritual elevation. He warns against 'ignorant altruism,' where people claim to live for others but cause harm due to a lack of self-knowledge. He cites the example of parents who sacrifice everything for their children but, lacking self-awareness, end up ruining their children's lives. Finally, he discusses the relationship between the body and consciousness. He explains that while the body has basic survival needs, it is consciousness that experiences suffering and requires healing. He observes that despite unprecedented modern economic prosperity, people are more mentally troubled than ever because they invest all their resources into bodily comforts and external appearances rather than the elevation of consciousness. He concludes by urging individuals to prioritize their spiritual well-being, noting that those who truly care for their own spiritual interest ultimately benefit the entire world.
