Description

Acharya Prashant addresses the common mistake of trying to overcome personal tendencies by simply doing their opposite. He explains that if an action is born out of a false state of mind, its reversal is equally false. Using the analogy of a reversible chemical reaction, he points out that moving from right to left instead of left to right does not free one from the underlying chemistry. Similarly, if a person is 'drunk' or 'sleepwalking,' changing direction does not change their internal state of intoxication or unconsciousness; it only adds a layer of vanity and carelessness because they believe they are now doing the 'right' thing. This cycle of opposing one's tendencies is described as duality, whereas the truth has no opposites. He further explores the fear of the 'unknown' or 'automatic' decision-making that occurs when one stops making ego-driven choices. Acharya Prashant asserts that it is impossible to be afraid of the truly unknown because fear requires an image or prior knowledge. When people claim to fear the unknown, they are actually afraid of the 'known' coming to an end, or they have created a terrifying mental image of the unknown to justify staying within their comfort zone. He concludes that authentic, spontaneous choices come from the heart and are beyond advance imagination. Fear only arises because we cling to the security of our current knowledge and the images we have constructed.
