Description

Acharya Prashant explains that there are two distinct types of slavery. The first is obvious: when someone else imposes their will or goals upon you, making it clear that they are the master and you are the slave. Because this form of exploitation is visible, it is relatively easier to resist and escape. The second type is far more dangerous and subtle: the slavery of one's own mind. In this state, an individual believes they are acting out of their own free will, saying, "This is my choice," without realizing that their desires have been externally implanted. Using the analogy of a street food vendor, Acharya Prashant illustrates how sensory triggers—sight, smell, and sound—can manipulate the mind into wanting something. The person believes the desire to eat is their own, but it is actually a reaction to external stimuli. This hidden slavery is perilous because the victim will fight to defend their 'right' to be enslaved, opposing anyone who tries to offer wisdom. He asserts that almost every desire that arises in the mind is a result of external influence; there is no such thing as a truly independent or 'own' desire. To be truly free, one must move beyond both the dictates of others and the whims of the mind, choosing instead to live by understanding and discernment. True liberation comes from acting only through one's own intelligence and awareness, rather than being driven by conditioned desires.
