Description

Acharya Prashant explains that if a text is spiritual, then a verse (shloka) begins with you and extends to the infinite. The verse itself becomes a complete expanse. At the level of language, it is connected to you, and at the level of its purpose or goal, it extends to the infinite. To ask how one can know if they have understood a verse is to misunderstand its nature. Understanding a verse means you have reached its end, and the end of the verse is your own end. Therefore, if you are still present to ask whether you have understood the verse, it means you have not understood anything yet. The one who understands the verse comes to an end, because the very function of the verse is to take you to the end. For this reason, a verse is never fully understood; it is recited continuously. A verse is not a single thing that can be grasped. It is a complete journey, from you to the infinite. The infinite is its end. You begin the journey with the words. If they are in your language, you can interpret them; if in another language like Sanskrit, you can read the translation. This is just the beginning. At this point, the verse is at your level. You have to journey with the verse. The verse exerts a force, pulling you upwards. As you rise, you will understand the meaning of the verse at the next level. The journey is long; if you have to go to the infinite, the remaining journey is as long as it was before. This process of recitation is repeated. The verse pulls you a little higher, and as you ascend, the meanings of the verse change for you. The final meaning of a verse is your own end. In your current state, whatever meaning you derive from the verse cannot be the final one. The ultimate meaning is that you have been erased, that the interpreter is no more. This is why the higher meanings of a verse will not be comprehensible to you initially, because you are not yet at the level where you can understand them. You have to travel upwards with the verse. The verse has infinite levels, and it reveals its meaning according to the level you are on. Therefore, one undertakes a journey with the verse, slowly and continuously. Throughout your life, you can recite the verses, and your consciousness will rise along with them.
