Description

Acharya Prashant responds to a question about the place of Samadhi in daily life, which is based on a quote by Ramana Maharshi stating that scripture learning is a predisposition (vasana) and realization is only in Samadhi. Acharya Prashant begins by highlighting the flawed premise of the question, which seeks to fit Samadhi into one's daily life as if daily life is the unchangeable constant. He explains that this perspective inverts the proper relationship between the two. He clarifies that scriptures are only for the troubled, confused, and tense mind that has lost its way and does not know itself. He draws an analogy between scriptures and medicine. Just as medicine is for a diseased body, scriptures are for a diseased mind. Medicine's purpose is to fight the disease, not to create health, which is the body's natural state. Similarly, scriptures do not bring about Samadhi; their purpose is to cut down illusions. Samadhi is the natural state of the mind, which is revealed once the illusions are gone. The scriptures themselves state that their only purpose is to rid one of sorrow. Acharya Prashant emphasizes that the scriptures are purposeful documents, like medicine, and once they have served their purpose of removing the disease of illusion, they become redundant. The scriptures themselves suggest that once a person is liberated, they should be set aside or even metaphorically burned. However, he strongly cautions that this is the final step in a very long journey, not the first. One must first work diligently with the scriptures for a long time. The attachment to scriptures, as Ramana Maharshi called a 'vasana', is the final predisposition that cuts down all other predispositions. One should not give up this 'all-hacking vasana' prematurely. He asserts that no one in the audience is yet at the stage to forsake the scriptures. The correct approach is to be in Samadhi and let Samadhi rule one's daily life, not the other way around. When one is in Samadhi, daily life flows beautifully and great things are accomplished without needless tension.
