Acharya Prashant addresses the question of being ruled by wrong notions and lacking the courage to be governed by the truth. He explains that the adverse forces one feels ruled by are not entirely external. If these forces were completely external, they would have no effect. When someone misleads or deceives us, it is because they have found an ally within us. An external enemy can only harm you if there is an enemy already sitting inside. The external force takes advantage of your unconsciousness or lack of faith in the truth to enter and rule from within. What appears to be an external power is actually an internal one, making you dance to its tunes. The speaker clarifies that while there are external things adverse to one's peace, they cannot harm you unless there is an internal opponent to peace. If you are not aligned with the external darkness, it will only make you stronger and more aware of your inner light. However, when the external darkness becomes internal darkness, stumbling is inevitable. You are not a victim of external circumstances, people, or the past. Everything that happens in your life is your choice. The difference between people is not that one is a master and another a slave; it's that one lives consciously and the other unconsciously. Ultimately, every person acts on their own decisions. Spirituality, he states, is about taking this responsibility. It is the honest acceptance that your life is your choice. This realization brings a great revolution and immense power. True theism (astikta) is not about believing in an external entity but about taking full responsibility for your life. It means choosing which internal force will rule you. Within you exist both illusion (maya) and truth, bondage and liberation. True theism, or dharma, is to consciously choose truth as your ruler and allow yourself to be governed by it. The choice is always yours.
