Acharya Prashant addresses the reasons why people, especially newcomers, hesitate to ask profound questions. He explains that there are both internal and external reasons, but the external is merely a function of the internal. Obvious external factors include being in a foreign country, the speaker being an alien, and the overwhelming number of spiritual speakers in a place like Rishikesh. However, the core reasons are internal. The primary internal reason is the fear of losing one's identity; if one's problems are resolved, the 'problemed one' ceases to exist. This resistance is a self-defeating approach rooted in ignorance about one's own situation. Often, people are not even aware of what truly bothers them, or they believe they are already alright, which prevents them from seeking solutions. He further elaborates on the dynamic between seekers and teachers, stating a fundamental rule: "If you get a false teacher, that is what you deserved." Finding a great teacher is a matter of grace, not something earned or deserved. If one is misguided by a false teacher, it is because the seeker was attracted to what the teacher offered, which catered to their own desires. The false teacher knows what the student is looking for and advertises accordingly. The student gets lured and trapped, and it is squarely the student who is to be blamed. A sincere student, on the other hand, is not easily fooled. Having done their own internal work, they are full of sharp questions. They will debate, question, and contradict, not to offend, but to ascertain the teacher's authenticity. A sincere student is eager to 'quarrel' because they are in love with finding the right teacher. The fundamental starting point for any spiritual journey is not the lofty concept of 'I am Brahman,' but the honest admission, 'I am not okay.' This honesty compels one to examine their life and daily actions. It is only with this self-awareness that scriptures become useful, as one can then resonate with their teachings. The right teacher cannot be selected, but with groundedness, familiarity with facts, and honesty, the false ones can be rejected.
