Acharya Prashant addresses a question from a 30-year-old man suffering from bipolar disorder for over a decade. He begins by differentiating between diseases of the mind and diseases of the brain. He states that diseases of the brain are physical and require physical treatment, such as medicine, injections, or surgery, and he hopes the questioner has already consulted doctors for this. However, he emphasizes that typically, in 90-95% of mental illnesses, the problem is not at the level of the brain but at the level of the mind. He explains that allopathy often treats the brain for a problem of the mind, which he calls a childish approach. The speaker clarifies the distinction: the brain is a gross organ of the body that can be touched and operated on, whereas the mind is subtle and cannot be touched. Most mental illnesses, he asserts, are at the level of the mind. When you give pills to the brain, you are only suppressing the expression of the mental disease through the brain. The disease itself, which is in the mind, remains. The disease is mental, and its effect is seen on the brain. By using medicines on the brain, you are only suppressing the symptoms, not curing the disease. For any physical issues, one should take physical medicine, but the ultimate cure for the mind's ailments is spirituality. To illustrate his point, Acharya Prashant quotes Kabir Saheb: "When the serpent of separation resides in the body, no mantra works. One separated from Ram cannot live, and if they do, they live like a madman." He explains that this couplet refers to mental illnesses. All those who are mentally ill are, in fact, poisoned by the separation (virah) from the Self (Ram). That is why no mantra, or in modern times, no medicine, works on them. One who is separated from Ram either cannot live or lives like a madman. The fundamental cause of all mental illnesses, including depression and anxiety, is spiritual. Taking pills only suppresses the symptoms of these diseases. The disease itself is related to your very being (hasti). Until you give the center of your being its rightful place, your being will remain diseased. The only real cure is to delve deeper and deeper into spirituality and get closer to the truth of your being.
