Description

Acharya Prashant explains that a Guru is a messenger. As long as the Guru is delivering the message without any distortion, fraud, adulteration, or mixture, their words are worth listening to. The day they start adulterating the message, they should be abandoned immediately. He quotes, "If a Guru cannot dispel delusion and the being's misconceptions don't go away, know that Guru to be false, and don't delay in leaving them." If being with a Guru does not remove the mind's darkness, delusions, and misconceptions, one should not take a moment to leave them. One should immediately abandon such a Guru. The goal is truth and freedom, not individuals. What is there in individuals? People come and go. Every person is just like another. You are a puppet of flesh and bones, and so is the other person. The one you call a Guru is also a puppet of flesh and bones. One is not to worship the physical body. If you have to worship the physical body, then worship your own; you also have one. One should worship the truth that emerges from that physical body. If that truth stops coming from the physical body, or if you find that it was never coming and you were listening to someone under a delusion, then one should not delay in leaving. Say goodbye. A Guru can be the highest instrument, and there is no bigger cage than a Guru. If you get trapped, you are trapped. Then for the rest of your life, the worship of the Guru or Satguru continues. That has become slavery. A Guru can be a carrier of liberation, and a Guru can also become a great form of slavery for you. Mostly, in the name of a Guru, one gets slavery. The mind is shut down. The faculty of contemplation is destroyed. The power to think and understand is ruined. Good people go and sit in spiritual discourses and sermons, and after that, they start talking foolishly and become superstitious. That's why one should be cautious of this Guru-Satguru racket and keep testing continuously. The yardstick is whether you are attaining liberation or not, whether your bondages are being cut or not, whether the darkness is receding or not, and whether you are understanding things you didn't understand before. This is the criterion. Otherwise, I say again, you are not supposed to start worshipping a person. Look after your own well-being. A Guru is one who can be helpful in your well-being. As long as they are helpful, it is a good thing. Otherwise, you go your way, and I'll go mine.
