Description

Acharya Prashant advises a young student who is torn between her spiritual inclination and her family's desire for her to pursue a medical career. He emphasizes that true spirituality does not mean abandoning worldly education or professional pursuits. Instead, he explains that a deep understanding of the world—including science, psychology, philosophy, economics, and politics—is essential to living from a center of truth. He shares his own background, noting that his studies in engineering, management, and his experiences in the corporate world and civil services contribute significantly to his spiritual teachings. He asserts that without understanding 'Avidya' or worldly knowledge, one cannot truly grasp the essence of the Upanishads or Vedanta. He further clarifies that a 'worldly' person is actually someone who does not understand how the world functions, often getting lost in micro-issues while ignoring the macro-perspective. In contrast, a spiritual person is one who understands the world thoroughly but remains unattached to it. He encourages the student to complete her medical studies and gain diverse knowledge and experience. He uses the metaphor of Shri Hanuman entering Lanka not to settle there for its gold, but to gather information for Shri Ram and eventually set it on fire. Similarly, one should enter the world to understand its mechanisms and gain insight without becoming a prisoner to it.
