Description

Acharya Prashant explains that one's attention should not be on the Supreme Being (Parmatma) but on Maya (illusion). He argues that it is impossible to meditate on the Supreme Being because it has no form, color, shape, or name, making it impossible for the mind to grasp. Instead, attention should be directed towards Maya, which is constantly active, creating mischief and disturbances. Meditation, therefore, is the act of observing what mischief Maya is currently engaged in. Just as the Lord is vast, Maya is also vast, only slightly less so, and she can deceive a person in countless ways without them even realizing it. The true meaning of meditation is to be aware of what is currently disturbing one's peace. One cannot feel the presence of peace, but one can feel when peace is disturbed. Since peace itself cannot be an object of experience, one cannot meditate on it. The object of meditation must be the disturbance of peace, which is something that can be experienced. Therefore, one must remain continuously alert to this disturbance. The speaker uses the analogy of a watchman to describe the ideal relationship with the mind. One should be like a watchman guarding an empty house; the slightest rustle of a leaf should startle him. Similarly, the moment the mind rustles, one should be startled. The mind, like the house, must be kept empty. This constant vigilance is the practice of meditation. One must become so sensitive to inner restlessness that even the slightest tremor causes a jolt. The word 'meditation' itself is only relevant in the context of restlessness; a person who is already peaceful has no need for it. This practice involves making the mind so sensitive that it is startled by the slightest disturbance. One should not be tolerant of the mind's garbage, as the mind is a place where there is no room for it. Compromising with the mind's noise is a great folly. The first step is to recognize that any disturbance is a problem. Once the 'thieves' and 'aunties' (disturbances) know that the watchman is alert, they will not even attempt to enter. This is meditation.
