Description

Acharya Prashant explains that disowning the self does not merely mean rejecting things that cause irritation or misery. He clarifies that the self thrives on both pain and pleasure, and one cannot selectively disown only the negative aspects while clinging to the positive ones. Disowning the self means ceasing to identify with the constant fluctuations of the mind, whether they manifest as excitement or despair. He emphasizes that the mind often repeatedly seeks solace in places where it has already been proven that peace cannot be found. He uses the analogy of entering a wrong password into a bank account; if one persists in using a known incorrect password, the account eventually gets blocked, preventing access to one's own inner wealth. Regarding the relationship between desire and fear, Acharya Prashant asserts that every desire is rooted in the impulse to either gain something or prevent the loss of something. He advises that one should examine what they are afraid of losing or what they are trying to protect. He states that all fears are detrimental except for one: the fear of losing oneself or drifting away from one's true essence. He teaches that while external things are temporary and destined to be lost, the relationship with the soul is the only thing worth preserving. It is not that a person saves the soul, but rather that the soul saves the person. Therefore, if one senses a rift in their connection to the soul, they must prioritize repairing that relationship above all other worldly affairs.
