Description

Acharya Prashant responds to a question about being completely identified with the past. He challenges this notion by asking why, if one is entirely the past, they are seeking answers from an external source. The very act of questioning and feeling dissatisfied with one's state indicates an awareness of a deficiency. This awareness itself is not part of the past. He explains that while the content of consciousness might be the past, consciousness itself is like an empty container. This emptiness, which is one's true nature, has the capacity for receptivity and is what allows for the present conversation. However, this emptiness is currently filled with the useless baggage of the past, which is the cause of suffering. One is not just empty, but a "uselessly filled emptiness." The speaker points out that the dominance of the past is a choice. In the moment of paying attention to something meaningful, like the ongoing dialogue, the past does not dominate. The way to deal with the past is not to stand guard against it, but to engage in meaningful action and conversation. Since one is always engaged in some action, the choice is between meaningful and meaningless action. Addressing a follow-up question about liberation not being possible alone, Acharya Prashant clarifies that helping others achieve liberation does not mean indulging their current state. Using an analogy, he explains that if a child is creating a ruckus, the way to help them is not to join their drama but to show them something better by choosing the better option for oneself. By freeing yourself from their low-grade drama, you show them the way to their own liberation. Giving in to their drama only reinforces it.
