Description

Acharya Prashant explains a verse by Kabir Saheb, "Those who want nothing are the king of kings." He clarifies that this is not a method but a description. It is not that by practicing 'not wanting,' one becomes a king; rather, one who is already a king (complete within) naturally has no desires. The state of not wanting is a symptom or a fruit of completeness, not its cause. He uses the analogy of a full stomach: one doesn't first decide not to eat and then become full; one is full, and therefore, the desire for food ceases. The speaker poses a counter-question: does freedom come first, or does not wanting come first? He explains that completeness (Purnata) comes first, which then leads to renunciation (Vairagya). The one who is a king has nothing left to desire because he realizes there is no real separation between the inner and the outer. All desires are seen as internal movements, not as a pull towards external objects. Therefore, the idea of practicing desirelessness to achieve freedom is a misunderstanding. Acharya Prashant states that no one can teach a method to become a king because, in essence, one already is a king. To ask for a method is a question born of ignorance. The only real path is to see one's current state of being trapped in desires and worries. This act of seeing, or observation (Dhyan), is the true meditation. It is not a specific activity but a continuous awareness of what is happening in the present moment. This seeing is the medicine that cures the disease of bondage. He concludes that when you see your bondages clearly, an inner dissatisfaction arises that brings about transformation. This is the essence of spirituality. The only method is to see things as they are, when they are. This seeing has the power to dissolve the unnecessary. When you see the pain in your desires and worries, you will naturally let them go. This is the only way to be free from them.
