Description

Acharya Prashant begins by questioning why we don't have genuine, deep conversations with our family members like mothers, fathers, siblings, or spouses. He notes that such conversations are more likely to happen with friends. Often, the condition of a boy or girl at home is better known to their friends than to their parents. Another possibility is that if you ask too many questions, the other person might get upset, leading to the end of any question-answer exchange. Ultimately, life is short and passes in the blink of an eye. The speaker explains that all the diversities we see are not actually different. Superficially, things are written differently, but inside, the book is one, the story is one. First, everything that appears different on the outside is one. Second, that which is one on the outside is also one with you. The one fact behind the external diversities is the same as your own inner fact. The statement "you are in all beings, and all beings are in you" means there is nothing outside that is different from you. When there is nothing outside that is different from you, what new thing will you find by wandering outside? He uses an analogy to explain this. Potatoes arrive at the market in a large truck. Ten different vendors buy from the same truck and go out to sell. One calls them "Sohan's potatoes," another calls them "Mohan's potatoes," each claiming their potatoes are the best and special. The buyers, who never go to the main market, don't know the supply chain and are deceived into thinking the potatoes are different. This is our life. We are all made of the same five elements and three Gunas, yet we seek something special, which is a delusion. We don't know ourselves, so we don't realize that the cure for our inner ailment is not in the 'potatoes' outside. We self-diagnose that we have a deficiency of potatoes and consume more, which only worsens our condition. The speaker states that the world is full of such deceptions, and one needs the right intention to see the truth. Faith (Shraddha) means that truth is not bad for anyone. Even if it feels bad, one must remember that it is not, and be patient. The role of a teacher like Ashtavakra is to jolt us awake, but we must see with our own eyes. The core of Advaita Vedanta is that duality is false because the seer and the seen are one. The purpose of your life is not to chase the world but to awaken, so that the duality and conflict between the individual and the world disappear.
