Description

Acharya Prashant addresses a question from a student about why the mainstream education system neglects wisdom and spirituality. He explains that there are two reasons for this: one eternal and one contemporary. The eternal reason is 'Prakriti' or nature. The speaker explains that man is fundamentally a body, an evolutionary being, not designed to prioritize wisdom or realization. His basic needs and instincts are animalistic and centered on the body. The primary identity of a human being is the body; without it, the human being ceases to exist. All human actions, thoughts, emotions, and even the intellect itself, arise from this bodily identification. Consequently, all human achievements, including science and technology, are ultimately for the body's safety, upkeep, and pleasure. The teachings of sages like J. Krishnamurti and Swami Vivekananda are about transcending this bodily identification, which creates a fundamental conflict. This is why man is naturally hostile or indifferent to these teachings, as they challenge his very foundation. Man's response is to ignore the teacher, and if the teachings threaten his world, he will try to destroy the teacher. This is the world's revenge on the teacher for trying to destroy its false reality. The contemporary reason is related to power and politics. In a democratic system, leaders are chosen by the masses, who are not naturally inclined towards wisdom. Their priorities are material, such as jobs and security. Therefore, the leaders and policymakers who shape the education system do not value or incorporate wisdom literature into the curriculum. A true teacher is a rarity, an abnormality, and thus the smallest possible minority in a democracy. The democratic process, which counts heads, does not care for what is inside the head, which is wisdom. The speaker distinguishes between intellect (IQ, the brain's capacity for knowledge) and intelligence or wisdom (the purity of intention for self-inquiry). The education system focuses on developing the intellect, which serves the body, but not wisdom, which is about knowing the self beyond the body. Mankind keeps the teachers as a last resort, only turning to them after all other options have been exhausted and have led to devastation.
