Description

Acharya Prashant responds to a question about whether an interest in science and the world indicates a lack of spiritual understanding. He explains that any interest is beneficial if its purpose is to cut through one's inner delusions. Whatever dissolves one's being and removes old notions is good for you. The purpose of knowledge is not to earn a better livelihood or obtain a degree. People often gather information for various reasons, such as for the sake of interest, like reading newspapers about politics, or out of fear, like watching TV during a pandemic to know how many have died. All this is not knowledge; it is information that becomes food for the ego. The speaker emphasizes that the intention behind seeking knowledge is what matters. There is a difference in intention. You might be seeking knowledge to maintain the darkness within you. He gives an example of a person who wants to sleep during the day and has curtains in their room. They are trying to find out how to operate the curtains to keep the room dark, even when light is ready to enter. Similarly, we often seek knowledge to maintain our dark places. We have a great interest in not knowing, a great concern that we might find out the truth. This is why we do not see what is right in front of us. We need someone to grab us and show us what we are doing. Acharya Prashant criticizes common spiritual claims, such as seeing with a third eye or hearing the unstruck sound, calling them exaggerations. He asserts that truth can be seen with these very two eyes if the intention is pure. The eyes are not weak, they are dirty; they are not powerless, they are covered. He explains that the filth on the eyes is bad intention. If the intention behind the eyes is pure, then truth will be visible through these very eyes. Spirituality is the investigation of truth, not of fantasies. It is about knowing your mind, your activities, your emotions, and the nature of the world without any misconceptions. This is spirituality.
