Description

Acharya Prashant refutes the notion that words are ineffective, asking what the alternative would be. He explains that it is one's consciousness that is restless, and consciousness operates on thought and knowledge. It holds concepts and principles. For instance, consciousness does not contain a physical object like a mobile phone or a table, but rather the thought or idea of it, such as, 'This table is mine.' Therefore, consciousness is composed of words, and we live within these words. The entire content of consciousness is nothing but words. He illustrates this by positing a scenario where a person is hit on the head and forgets all past 'words' or concepts. In such a state, they would not recognize their own wife, not because the physical person is gone, but because the 'word' or idea identifying her as 'wife' has been forgotten. Our very existence, the sense of 'I am,' is just a word. In deep sleep, when this idea is forgotten, our sense of self disappears. If the word 'I am' exists, you exist; if it doesn't, you don't. Thus, words are not trivial; we are fundamentally constituted by them. Acharya Prashant criticizes those who dismiss talk in favor of 'experience,' pointing out that they fail to grasp that the ultimate reality for us is the word, as consciousness functions through words and thoughts. The problem lies not with words themselves, but with corrupt thoughts. When people are unwilling to understand the word, they resort to superficial rituals. He concludes by reiterating that the word is the ultimate thing. When someone shouts 'Snake!', the listener's body reacts with fear and sweat, not from experiencing the actual snake, but from the word itself. The experience is generated by the word, proving that words are everything.
