Description

Acharya Prashant begins by advising the listener not to be surprised if his words are not fully understood, as they are not meant for complete intellectual comprehension but are rather pointers. It is enough if they provide a sense of direction. He clarifies that this is not science, where an equation becomes perfectly clear, nor is it mathematics, where one gets an accurate answer to the fourth decimal place. He suggests not to apply too much intellect, as it leads to entanglement. Instead, one should immerse oneself in the subject to find clarity, as it cannot be understood through reasoning, dissection, or analysis. He explains that every field has its own discipline. In conventional studies, like engineering, the analytical or 'cutting' intellect is essential because one is studying external objects. However, in the context of self-knowledge, this same intellect becomes an obstacle. One must set it aside, as using it as a tool here will yield no results; something else is required. The intellect that helps you understand electrical engineering will become a hindrance on this path. Therefore, that intellect must be put aside. Responding to a question about self-awareness, the speaker distinguishes between 'self-consciousness' (Atma-gyan or self-knowledge) and 'self-awareness' (Atma-bodh or self-realization). Self-consciousness is being aware of one's actions, daily activities, and thoughts; it is the mind observing the mind. It involves thinking about oneself, which we all do, asking questions like, 'What will happen to me?' or 'What do others think of me?'. This, however, has its limits because the conditioned mind is being used to observe itself, which often becomes a bondage. The 'self' in self-consciousness is the ego. Self-awareness, on the other hand, is a state where the center of the ego dissolves. The 'self' present in self-consciousness is absent in self-awareness. While everyone is self-conscious, self-awareness is a different realm. The journey of life is from self-consciousness to self-awareness. Society provides a certain kind of consciousness, which is just knowledge or information. To move from there to realization (bodh) is the real task. This journey begins with self-consciousness, by asking what one has done all day and who is behind one's decisions. When this self-inquiry is pursued with total intensity and a deep longing to end all confusion, thoughts begin to filter out, and clarity emerges. One uses thought with such eagerness to understand that thought itself starts to dissipate, like clearing clouds. When clarity arrives, the need for thought ceases, and the issue itself disappears. This state is self-awareness, a field of open sky where one is not dependent on others and is at peace. The constant internal battle of thoughts, the indecisiveness, which is the source of suffering, comes to an end. This is the journey from self-inquiry to self-realization.
