Acharya Prashant states that it is not at all possible to be spiritual and eat animals. He explains that to be spiritual is to simply know who one is and what is happening through them. A spiritual person would not be blind to what is kept on their plate. To be spiritual is to be not fragmented, and such a person would really know what hunger, food, and the food chain are. They would understand where their food is coming from, both physically and mentally, and this knowledge would prevent them from consuming flesh. A spiritual man does not relate to others in terms of the body; it is something of the 'I'. When a truly awake person looks into an animal's eyes, they will only see their own deep, hidden innocence. It is impossible to see anybody else when one really looks around, as the eyes are a mirror. Therefore, to slaughter an animal is to slaughter oneself. This connection extends to all of nature; destroying jungles or polluting rivers is destroying the greenery and purity within oneself. One cannot misbehave towards animals without misbehaving towards oneself, because one is the universe. True veganism is not a taught quality but something of the heart, a religion in its essence about having the right relationship with the world. It is a destroyer of all arguments. One is truly a vegan if, in spite of all arguments against it, they refuse to do what is against their nature. Spirituality is about moving from incompletion to completion, and killing or destroying moves one in the opposite direction. One should not live by feelings, as they are fleeting and the source of man's suffering. Being a vegan is a beautiful silence, a freedom from feelings like tension, excitement, pleasure, and pain. The highest want is not for feelings, but for understanding and living by one's innocent nature. This want is love.
