Description

Acharya Prashant explains that the ego uses everything, including meditation and sex, as an escape to ensure its own continuity. While sex provides a momentary experience of peace and the absence of the 'me' or ego, the ego is too terrified to allow that peace to become permanent. It seeks only a small portion of truth or silence to refresh itself so it can continue with its usual, routine existence. The ego's primary priority is its own sustenance, and it demands that even the truth remain subservient to this goal. Consequently, people relegate meditation to a small, isolated part of their daily schedule rather than letting it transform their entire lives. Acharya Prashant further clarifies that the mind uses meditation as a tool to become more effective in its mundane and soul-sapping activities. Just as sex is used as a temporary relief to enable one to return to a dull routine the next morning, meditation and prayer are often used as enablers for the ego to remain as it is. People exploit even the highest spiritual concepts, gurus, and holy places to serve their petty, limited purposes. The ego is described as an exploitative and foolish entity that stands before the ocean of the infinite but asks for only a few drops that fit within its own limitations. It accepts the brief peace of an orgasm but rejects the infinite peace of Samadhi because the latter would mean the total dissolution of the ego.
