Acharya Prashant uses the metaphor of a false sentry or watchman stationed at the door of one's existence to explain the nature of the ego. This watchman filters everything that enters the house, only allowing information that justifies his continued employment and authority. He thrives on the perception of danger; the more threatened the inhabitants feel, the more power, salary, and status the watchman demands. If a message arrives stating that there is no danger and the watchman is unnecessary, he suppresses or alters it to maintain the illusion of crisis, thereby ensuring his own survival and dominance over the household.
