Description

Acharya Prashant explains that choosing the right work requires looking beyond oneself. If an individual makes choices based on personal past, habits, interests, or financial gain, the criteria for selection will remain flawed. For a young person, the correct criterion for choosing work is to identify what the world, the country, the ecosystem, or society at large truly needs. He cites Bhagat Singh as an example, noting that freedom was not merely a personal 'interest' for him but a supreme duty. True work is not determined by one's academic background or personal preferences, as these are often limited by ego and social conditioning. Acharya Prashant emphasizes that 'interest' is a poor guide, as many people's interests are directed toward trivial or harmful things. He further clarifies that spirituality is the movement from selfishness to the welfare of all. One should not be preoccupied with what they personally want or whether they have reached a certain 'level' before helping others. Using the example of a dying neighbor, he argues that the immediate need of the other is more important than one's own state of being. He also addresses the concern regarding the results of one's labor, invoking the principle of 'Nishkama Karma' from the teachings of Shri Krishna. One has the right to perform the action, but no control over the fruits. If a task is right and necessary, it must be done regardless of the expected outcome. Right action is its own reward and serves to pull the individual out of the narrow confines of the ego.
