Description

Acharya Prashant explains the two things that prevent a person from being worldly successful or, rather, make a person a slave of the world. The first reason is being so naive or ignorant that others can overwhelm, outsmart, or overpower you. This can happen through temptation, by defeating you with their efficiency and industriousness, or by simply making a fool of you. If you are not successful in the world, the likely first reason is that others are able to deceive you. The second reason is inner: being inwardly slothful, lazy, and a victim of your own tendencies. This state prevents any well-directed effort from arising from within, and without such effort, one cannot accomplish anything worthwhile in the world. The speaker then relates this to the disciples who sought out sages, noting that it is not very significant that they were often kings. What is significant is that these individuals did not carry either of the two aforementioned follies. These disciples were not so naive that the world could take them for a ride; they knew the ways of maya (illusion) in others. Secondly, they were not inwardly dull or lazy, so they could also see the maya within themselves. These were people with a certain qualification: mental sharpness. They were sharp enough to manage the state and also sharp enough to see what is empty and hollow within themselves. This is the particular combination of a disciple: someone who is successful in the world but finds that worldly success is not sufficing. The right disciple is not someone who is tempted, scared, or easily defeated by the world. The world is unable to neither overwhelm them nor tempt them.
