Description

A questioner, who is a married woman with a deep interest in spirituality, asks if it is necessary for her to earn a living. She explains that she is a housewife, and her husband's good job ensures all their financial and other needs are met, allowing her to dedicate her time to spiritual reading and practice (sadhana). Given her comfortable situation, she questions the speaker's emphasis on financial independence for women. Acharya Prashant responds by stating that there are certain unbreakable principles of life that apply to everyone. One such principle is that, except for a liberated person (Jivanmukta), no one does anything for anyone else selflessly. As long as the ego (aham) exists, all actions are driven by self-interest to fulfill the ego's needs. The only exception is a spiritually advanced, liberated being, whose actions are for the welfare of all. However, such individuals are extremely rare. He addresses the housewife's argument that staying at home for spiritual practice while being financially dependent is a good arrangement. He calls this a sweet-sounding but dangerous illusion. This setup is not an act of selfless love but a transaction. If the husband is an ordinary, non-liberated person, he is not providing for her for free. There is always a give-and-take involved. This dependency creates a state of indebtedness. Being a debtor creates a compulsion to give back, often leading to exploitation where one gives more than they receive. Alternatively, if one doesn't give back, the debt accumulates. A person who is either exploited or indebted cannot attain liberation (mukti), as liberation means freedom from all such compulsions and debts. This cycle of debt, or karma, can even perpetuate across lifetimes, as one cannot be free, not even to die, until all debts are cleared. Acharya Prashant concludes that a person who is dependent on another for their basic physical sustenance cannot achieve spiritual liberation. The notion that 'he earns while I do sadhana' is a baseless and misleading comfort. In the realm of spirituality, everyone is a stranger except for the ultimate Truth. Therefore, it is far better for a woman to earn at least enough to cover her personal expenses, so her bread is not a product of debt and she does not have to be dependent on anyone.
