Description

Acharya Prashant addresses a question regarding Maslow's hierarchy of needs, particularly the placement of self-actualization at the top of the pyramid. He begins by stating that while Maslow's pyramid is a good and indicative model, it is not entirely exact. He challenges the notion that self-actualization is something that stands distinct from all other needs and is only pursued after lower needs like food, security, and self-esteem are satisfied. Instead of being the peak of the pyramid, Acharya Prashant posits that self-actualization is the very foundation of everything a person does. He elaborates that all human activities are fundamentally driven by the need for self-actualization. For instance, when a person seeks self-esteem, they are, in reality, seeking self-actualization through the medium of self-esteem. As conscious beings, our only profound need is self-actualization, and all other pursuits—be it for food, security, relationships, or respect—are merely precursors or mediums to achieve this ultimate goal. He distinguishes this from animal behavior, noting that an animal eats simply to survive, whereas a human eats to stay alive in order to be self-actualized. This underlying drive is present even if the person is not consciously aware of it. Acharya Prashant equates self-actualization with spiritual concepts like liberation or, in religious terms, God-attainment. He explains that people often seek this ultimate fulfillment through worldly achievements, such as a dream job or a partner, sometimes using phrases like "I see God in you," which reveals their underlying quest for self-actualization through relationships. He concludes that self-actualization is both the source from which all human motivations arise and the ultimate purpose of all actions. It is the earth and the sky of human existence, and every human being, regardless of their level of consciousness, lives for the sole purpose of actualization, whether they realize it or not.
