Description

Acharya Prashant explains the essence of the Putra Gita, a dialogue from the Mahabharata between a wise son, Medhavi, and his father. The son asks his father for guidance on the path of truth and liberation, having already studied the scriptures. The father provides the conventional answer: follow the Varnashrama Dharma, which involves entering the householder stage, having children, and then progressing to Vanaprastha and Sannyasa. The son counters this, questioning why his father, who has not found fulfillment on this path himself, is advising him to follow it, calling it a path to death. Acharya Prashant elaborates on the difficulty of overcoming ignorance, especially after one has invested a significant amount of time and resources into it. He states that time is our most valuable capital, and wherever we invest time, we also invest our attachments, delusions, and money. For an older person who has spent decades living a certain way, it is incredibly difficult to admit that their life was a waste. It requires a big heart, but most people are small and deeply identified with their past. To prove their past wrong is to prove their very identity wrong. A small person's nature is to cover up their mistakes. The truly remarkable part of the story, according to Acharya Prashant, is not the son's wisdom, which is common in revolutionary youth, but the father's ability to listen and accept the truth from his son. This acceptance is the real miracle. He suggests that the most honest advice most parents could give their children is to admit their own ignorance and advise them not to follow their path. However, pride and falsehood often prevent this. The path to growth and improvement begins with the courage to accept one's mistakes and smallness. The way to become big is not to hide one's smallness but to actively expose it.
