Description

Acharya Prashant addresses the question of why one should choose a job carefully if it is said that no work is big or small. He explains that this statement is not entirely wrong, but it is incomplete. The complete understanding is that if one has chosen the right goal, then any work done in service of that goal is neither big nor small; it is simply the right work. The rightness of the work is determined by the rightness of the goal it serves. To illustrate this, he provides two examples. First, if the goal is to win a battle, fighting the enemy's general and fighting a mere pawn are both equally important and right actions. Neither can be considered big or small in the context of the larger, correct goal. Similarly, if one's goal is to clean a messy room, sweeping the dust off the floor and collecting valuable currency notes from the bed are both equally necessary tasks. One cannot be called a small task and the other a big one, as both serve the same purpose of cleaning the room. Conversely, if the goal itself is wrong, then any work done towards it, whether seemingly big or small, is ultimately small and wrong. For instance, work done for petty self-interest is wrong because it harms both the individual and the world. In contrast, work done for a larger purpose that benefits many is the right work. Therefore, it is crucial to first determine what is worth doing and not just start any work under the assumption that all work is equal. The value of any work is intrinsically linked to the purpose behind it.
