If he were merely that person, he would be limited to a specific family, caste, and era. By maintaining this distance, he becomes universal and infinite. The speaker emphasizes that the 'I' which identifies with the body is mortal and bound by duties and limitations, whereas the true self is the observer or witness (Sakshi) of the body's actions.
