Description

Acharya Prashant explains that hypocrisy, or 'Mithyachar', arises from an existential dependence on others. When one's identity and worth are tied to the approval of others, life becomes a series of deals where one performs only the bare minimum of virtuous conduct required to secure social validation. This superficial restraint applies only to tangible actions—like words and physical movements—because these are the only things others can verify. Consequently, the inner mind is left to remain in its old, unrefined ways while the outward behavior is customized to appear respectable. This institutionalized hypocrisy is supported by social structures like law and order, which prioritize external civility over internal transformation, and is further enabled by biological limitations that prevent us from seeing into another's mind.
