Description

Acharya Prashant explains that human beings are not born with the tendency to compare themselves with others; rather, this behavior is conditioned by society, parents, and the educational system. He uses the example of a young child who paints joyfully for his own pleasure until he is introduced to the concepts of marks, rankings, and competition. Once the seed of comparison is sown, the child's focus shifts from the joy of the activity to performing better than his peers, leading to a life driven by envy and the fear of falling behind. This external pressure to meet standards and traditions destroys the individual's uniqueness and prevents true learning. He emphasizes that existence makes every individual unique, and comparing one person to another is as illogical as judging a fish by its ability to climb a tree. True intelligence and self-reliance come from being oneself rather than trying to become a photocopy of an ideal or another person. Acharya Prashant asserts that fundamental aspects of life, such as understanding, love, and joy, cannot exist in an environment of comparison. When one is truly immersed in an activity, there is no thought of how others are performing. He notes that those who achieve true excellence often do so because they are engrossed in the process and find joy in it, rather than being obsessed with results or rankings. Finally, he advises that success, achievements, and marks should be viewed as by-products of one's state of being rather than goals to be chased. He suggests that those who focus solely on percentages and results often fail to truly understand the subject matter. By abandoning the 'beggar-like' mindset of constantly asking for results and instead immersing oneself deeply in the work at hand, one naturally attracts accomplishment. The key to a fulfilling life is to move away from the culture of competition and return to one's authentic self.
