Description

Acharya Prashant explains that one can do away with addictions by taking on a higher addiction. He clarifies that complete freedom, whether from addictions or anything else, is the "absolutely last thing," and discussing it from our current state is not practical and will not work. We must realize that given our nature, we will inevitably relate to and clutch at something. We will definitely be addicted to something, so the choice is not whether to be addicted, but rather in being discreet about the object of our addiction. The solution proposed is to find the highest possible object to relate to. Acharya Prashant cites the sages who spoke of 'Ramkhumari' (the intoxication of Ram), suggesting that if one desires a high, they should pursue the high of Ram himself, where Ram denotes the Truth. He states that the way human life is, we will need to be immersed in something, and we have no choice in this matter. The option to be born and not be attached or related is not available to us. Therefore, one must simply choose rightly. If you are in the grip of an addiction, you must realize what the ego wants from that substance or object and question if you are truly getting what you want, which is hardly ever the case. The advice is to then choose something higher. Spirituality, before it deals with liberation, deals with conscious choice—choosing the highest possible. If the ultimate highest seems utopian, one can proceed step-by-step, choosing something progressively higher than the current addiction, and then perhaps reach the highest.
