Description

Acharya Prashant critiques the simplistic notion that all religiosity is merely about not hurting anyone. He observes that many people, including poets and intellectuals, reduce spirituality to a single sentence: "Do not cause hurt to anyone." They advocate for discarding all religions and doctrines in favor of this one principle, believing that the most important thing is to not cause anyone pain or bring tears to their eyes. The speaker challenges this idea by pointing out that the words of great spiritual masters, such as Shri Krishna or Christ, were often hurtful to many people. He questions whether modern thinkers believe they are more advanced than these masters. He also refers to saints like Meera, Kabir, and Farid, who cried extensively, indicating that their spiritual path was not about avoiding pain. This modern value of not hurting anyone, of not saying anything that might offend, is becoming deeply entrenched. Acharya Prashant explains that people often complain that his words are hurtful or that they are not enjoying the session. He clarifies that his purpose is to bring truth, not entertainment, and that it is the ego that gets hurt, not the true Self (Atma). He argues that one must abandon the value of avoiding things that cause a jolt. If you protect yourself from everything that hurts, your cage will never break. Citing Rumi, he states that rubbing is necessary to shine, and a wound is where the light enters you. He further explains that the principle of "don't hurt others" often stems from a mutual agreement born of fear: "I won't expose your fakeness if you don't expose mine." This is akin to the saying, "Those who live in glass houses don't throw stones at others," because in the conditioned world, everyone's house is made of glass. This leads to a culture of mutual flattery and scratching each other's backs. The person who is no longer afraid of being hurt themselves becomes dangerous to this system because they no longer care about the safety of others' egos either.
