Description

Acharya Prashant explains that the attempt to practice meditation often stems from the false assumption that one is separate from the Self or the Soul. He points out that when a person sets a goal in meditation, they are essentially declaring themselves to be distant from that goal. Since the Soul is unattached and inactive, if one truly knew themselves as the Soul, meditation would be unnecessary. He argues that while the stated goal of a practitioner is love for the Soul, their actions testify to a lack of honesty because they first identify with restlessness and then seek peace through various methods and processes. This effort, according to Acharya Prashant, only reinforces the ego's belief that it is something other than the Soul. Citing Ashtavakra, he mentions that the very effort to meditate becomes a bond. He contrasts organized meditation with the 'natural state of equanimity' mentioned by Kabir Saheb, known as 'Sahaj Samadhi'. This natural state is not something to be attained or practiced through systems; it is a state that is never lost and therefore does not require a journey to reach. The true teaching of the sages is to remain in this effortless state rather than engaging in the practice of meditation which assumes a distance from the Truth.
