Description

A questioner, who is a doctor, asks about the consciousness of a fetus and the validity of 'Garbh Sanskar' (prenatal education), citing scientific evidence about the development of hearing and comprehension in a fetus and child. She questions whether a fetus can truly be cultured through mantras given these biological limitations and asks if she should promote such practices. Acharya Prashant responds that he does not believe a six to eight-month-old fetus can be taught anything. He points out that even after birth, it is very difficult to teach a baby for many months, and the things that can be taught are very basic and primitive. He distinguishes between reacting and learning. Reacting to stimuli like light and sound is a natural, physical response, whereas learning is related to understanding (bodh). Learning and reacting are two very different things; learning is connected to comprehension, while reacting is a natural conditioning. He states that the belief that one can benefit from the sound of mantras without understanding their meaning is a superstition. This idea has been propagated by a priestly class that did not want the common people to understand the meaning of the scriptures. Sound is for animals; an animal does not understand meaning, only sound. A human being operates on meaning. The one who operates on sound is an animal, the one who operates on meaning is a human, and the one who transcends meaning and becomes silent is beyond human. He criticizes the practice of chanting mantras without understanding their meaning, calling it an insult to the mantras and an injustice to the scriptures. Acharya Prashant clarifies that the real 'Garbh Sanskar' is for the parents, not the fetus. If the mother listens to good words, she will benefit, and that benefit will certainly be passed on to the child. The mother and child are one body, and a human is psychosomatic; the mind affects the body. If the mother's mind is purified and calmed, her body will also be better, which in turn will benefit the child's body. The greatest help one can provide to a child is not to make them listen to mantras in the womb, but for the parents themselves to listen, read, and understand scriptures like the Upanishads, Vedanta, and the Gita. This is the real 'Garbh Sanskar'—the 'sanskar' (culturing) of the parents.
