Description

Acharya Prashant explains a couplet by Kabir Saheb that describes the rising of the sun of enlightenment and the sounding of the 'Anhad' (unstruck) sound. He clarifies that such verses are messages from those who have reached the ultimate state, intended to inspire seekers to feel dissatisfaction with their current darkness and aspire for the light. However, people often misuse these descriptions to falsely claim they have attained such states, using the message as an excuse to remain in their ignorance rather than as a motivation for change. He emphasizes that the state described is not something a person in that state would ask questions about; rather, one must first focus on removing their own illusions. He specifically addresses the widespread misunderstanding of 'Anhad Naad'. He explains that any sound heard through the ears is 'Aahat' (struck), as it involves sound waves striking the eardrum. Since the process of hearing requires this physical impact, the 'Anahata' or unstruck sound cannot be heard through the physical senses or the mind, which only stores past sensory experiences. He critiques modern claims of hearing 'Anhad' through various techniques or natural sounds like crickets or waterfalls, stating that these are still sensory experiences. True 'Anhad' refers to living in a state beyond duality, where the ego is completely dissolved. It is the silence behind all sounds that becomes apparent only when one is free from the 'I-sense'. He concludes that instead of being curious about 'Anhad', one should investigate their own ego; only when the ego is gone can that silence be realized.
