Description

Acharya Prashant addresses a question regarding Verse 505 of the Vivek Choodamani, which states that a man is unaffected by what happens to his shadow. He explains that the role of a shadow is simply to follow without doership, will, or personal direction. He points out that the questioner’s struggle to 'remember' or 'understand' this concept is itself an act of the ego claiming doership. A shadow does not need to understand or remember; it simply exists in relation to its master. He emphasizes that real understanding and action happen only in the absence of the self-conscious 'I'. He clarifies that while Adi Shankaracharya speaks from the perspective of the Atma (the Self), he is speaking to the ego. He suggests that instead of falsely claiming to be the Atma, one should truthfully acknowledge being the ego, but a 'servant ego' or 'shadow ego'. This means living in a state of surrender where one allows things to happen rather than trying to cause them. He describes joy as the pleasure of 'lying flat on the ground' like a shadow, where the head and feet are at the same level, symbolizing total surrender and the removal of the burden of individual pride. Acharya Prashant concludes by stating that as long as the body exists, the ego exists. The choice for a human being is not between ego and Atma, but between a stubborn, independent ego and a surrendered, servant ego. He warns against spiritual practitioners who claim to be the Truth or the Atma, as such claims are often the ego masquerading as the divine. True spirituality involves hunting for and recognizing the false within oneself. By truthfully declaring 'I am false' or 'I am the shadow,' one aligns with the Truth and finds freedom from the burdens of responsibility and doership.
