Description

Acharya Prashant explains the meaning of the 'Fear of God' by distinguishing between two types of fear. He begins by stating that fear means something is being taken away, or as he puts it, 'fear is the thought of losing something.' The first type of fear, which is common to most people, is the fear of not obtaining the world or the fear that the world is being taken away. The second type of fear, which is rare, is the fear that the Truth is being taken away. This fear arises in the mind of someone who feels that life is being wasted, that only a few moments are left, and they have not yet attained the Truth. This feeling that life has been wasted and one has not lived properly is what is called the 'Fear of God.' It is the fear that this limited life will end without having attained the Truth. This is not an ordinary fear. He further clarifies this by contrasting it with 'remembrance' (Surati). In remembrance, the mind remembers with love. In the 'Fear of God,' the mind also remembers, but it does so with the fear of not having attained the Truth. One type of remembrance is loving, thinking, 'How dear you are, how much peace you give, how much I have received from you.' The other remembrance, the 'Fear of God,' is the fear that 'I have not attained you,' or 'You always remembered me, but I did not remember you.'
