Description

Acharya Prashant addresses the misconception that individuals are the doers of their worldly actions. He explains that worldly activities are carried out by the body, intellect, and senses, which function as an autonomous and self-governing system. The belief that one is the controller of these functions is a delusion of the ego. He emphasizes that the body knows how to function even during sleep or in sudden reflexive situations without conscious intervention. Therefore, the idea of managing both worldly duties and spiritual liberation simultaneously is based on the false premise that the 'I' is the performer of worldly tasks. He clarifies that the true responsibility of an individual is not to manage the worldly system but to liberate oneself from it. Referring to Adi Shankara’s 'Nirvana Shatakam', he reminds the listener that the true self is neither the body, mind, intellect, nor ego. When one stops interfering in the natural functioning of the intellect and memory, these systems work more efficiently. True 'immersion' in work occurs when the ego is absent, allowing the natural system to perform while the self remains in a state of bliss, free from the burden of false responsibility. Acharya Prashant further explains that the ego seeks to feel important by assuming responsibility for things it does not actually control. He uses the analogy of flies in a room believing they are running the event to illustrate human arrogance. He points out that even the prospect of death often fails to change a person's deep-seated tendencies like greed, fear, and attachment, proving how little control the ego truly has. Ultimately, he defines 'bad karma' as the act of unnecessarily becoming a 'doer' or 'creator' of actions that would otherwise happen naturally. Liberation lies in surrendering the false sense of doership and recognizing one's existence beyond the worldly plane.
