Description

Acharya Prashant explains that pleasure and pain are not separate entities but two ends of the same duality. He defines pleasure as a temporary perception of the cessation of pain or a relief from it. However, this relief is inherently tied to the apprehension of future pain. Because one knows pleasure is mortal and will end, the desire to prolong it creates a deeper fear and suffering. Thus, even in moments of pleasure, one remains in a state of pain. This is why enlightened beings like the Buddha describe the world as suffering; since both pain and pleasure ultimately result in pain, the entire dualistic world is characterized by suffering. Acharya Prashant further clarifies that joy is distinct from pleasure. While pleasure is a movement within the trap of duality, joy is the freedom from both pain and pleasure. He compares a person seeking pleasure to a mouse caught in a trap, running from one end to the other because it believes liberation is impossible. People seek pleasure only because they are convinced that they cannot escape the system of slavery that duality imposes. True liberation comes from recognizing that pleasure and pain are a team working together to deceive the individual, and then choosing to step out of that dualistic trap entirely.
