Description

Acharya Prashant addresses the question of the 'real I' by stating that the matter is not complicated, but very simple. He illustrates this by pointing out how people's behavior and persona change depending on the situation. When the audience entered the room, they were one way, with a lot of noise and commotion. However, during the session, especially if a camera were turned on them, a completely different face would appear: absolutely calm, stable, and sitting like a statue. He continues by explaining that this is just one of many faces. A person will have a third face when they go outside, and another one at home in front of their parents. With friends, one has a certain face, and in front of a teacher, another. Even among friends, the face one shows depends on the specific friend they are with. The speaker notes that we are great actors, changing faces faster than a chameleon changes colors. The speaker further elaborates that the face presented to a boyfriend is different from the one shown to a father; if the father saw that face, there would be a big problem. Similarly, if the face shown to one's mother were presented to a girlfriend, she might run away, thinking him weak and cowardly. Therefore, a new face of bravery is required in that situation. All these constantly changing faces are what he calls the 'unreal I' or the 'fake I'. He concludes by defining the 'real I' as the one who can observe and recognize all these faces as fake. Whenever one is knowing the fake as fake, that knower is the real. That which can know that all this is fake is the real I. This capacity to know is called understanding or intelligence, as it can discern the fake. The very power of knowing is reality.
