Description

Acharya Prashant responds to a question about his rejection of meditation techniques, which were endorsed by masters like Osho and Ramana Maharshi. He clarifies that he does not dislike the techniques but rather the dishonesty of the mind that uses them. He states that he has never completely rejected techniques, but his objection is more with the dishonest mind behind them than the techniques themselves. He explains that if one examines his older talks, they will find detailed explanations of the dangers associated with these methods. To illustrate his point, he uses the analogy of a father wanting his child, who is afraid of drowning, to learn to swim. The father takes the child to a swimming coach, who starts the child in a shallow kids' pool with various safety aids like floaters and armbands. These aids represent the meditation techniques. While they prevent the child from drowning, they also prevent him from truly learning to swim. The purpose of these aids is to be used for a short period to build confidence before one can jump into the real, deep pool, which symbolizes life itself. In the pool of life, there are no such supports. The problem, he explains, is that people get stuck with these methods for years, remaining in the shallow pool. The technique, which is meant to be a temporary aid for meditation, becomes a conspiracy against meditation. It becomes a technique against meditation because people cling to it out of fear of 'drowning' in real life. He asserts that the methods of meditation are meant to be practiced for a few months and then discarded. However, due to dishonesty and fear, people cling to the method, and it becomes a barrier to meditation itself. He concludes that meditation techniques are a preparation for entering life and making all 24 hours meditative. People cling to a half-hour practice because they don't want meditation to encompass their entire life, as that would threaten their ego, attachments, and greed. He emphasizes that he loves meditation, and it is for this reason that he urges people to move beyond the techniques. His issue is not with the methods but with the dishonesty of the person who uses them as a crutch to avoid real meditation.
