Description

Acharya Prashant responds to a question about his journey from achieving conventional success (IIT, IIM, Civil Services) to choosing a spiritual path. He humbly states that his academic and other achievements have been portrayed as bigger than they actually are. He explains that the desire for such achievements stems from a fundamental human urge to do something good or big and reach the top of life. People pursue a good career, fame, money, and recognition because they are seeking the highest possible thing. However, he points out that nothing worldly or quantifiable, like a bank balance or academic marks, can ever bring full satisfaction. This inherent dissatisfaction, which he describes as the state of a 'dissatisfied consciousness' (Atript Chetna), is not a flaw but the very mark of being human. It is this discontentment that drives the continuous search for something 'higher than the highest.' He clarifies that his own journey was not a sudden, dramatic change of heart but a logical and continuous movement. He was always seeking the next better thing, which led him through a long and convoluted path of reading and experimentation. This journey eventually brought him to Vedanta, which he considers the highest purpose of life and the best thing he can share with others. He advises the youth not to settle down or commit themselves too early to anything, but to retain their freedom to keep moving and rising. He explains that his life has been one of continuous movement, and he was fortunate to not allow himself to be constrained. He expresses that if someone had told him these things when he was younger, it would have saved him a lot of time and suffering on his journey. Therefore, his path to Vedanta is not a deviation from the pursuit of success but a direct and logical extension of it, culminating in the search for the ultimate.
