Description

Acharya Prashant explains that the root of all bondages is 'not knowing' or ignorance. He dismisses other superficial reasons and focuses on this fundamental cause. He clarifies that while scriptures state that knowing the eternal, infinite, multi-formed creator leads to liberation, this does not mean that not knowing the creator is the cause of bondage. The speaker points out that the eternal is also unknowable (agyeya), and therefore, not knowing it cannot be considered a crime or a cause of suffering. The real offense, he asserts, is not knowing what can be known, which is Maya (illusion). Bondage arises from not knowing Maya. Quoting Kabir Saheb, "Maya is a great deceiver, I have known her," the speaker advises being cautious of Maya, which is present both internally and externally. One who knows Maya becomes free. This liberation, however, is not a dry or joyless state. The person who knows Maya does not merely become free from it but becomes its master (Mayapati). He again refers to Kabir Saheb, who said, "Maya cooks for me." For others, Maya is a demoness, but for Kabir, she is a servant. This, the speaker says, is the joy of living. Everything that could once deceive you, upon being understood, becomes your slave. The speaker emphasizes that liberation and joy (mukti and anand) are inseparable. Liberation is not about losing something precious; it is about that very thing, which was once a fetter, becoming a tool for your use. It is not about abandoning relationships but transforming them, so that what once caused trouble now brings joy. When you desire nothing, you receive everything. You are trapped by things because you want something from them. When you are internally complete, everything becomes available to you without binding you.
