Description

Acharya Prashant addresses a question about underestimating oneself, which leads to negativity, helplessness, and a lack of willpower and vision. He begins by challenging the premise that the questioner underestimates herself. He explains that if one's mental capacity, or the 'bowl of the mind,' were truly small, it could not contain so much negativity. The presence of a great deal of negativity indicates that the inner space is, in fact, very large. He clarifies that the issue is not underestimation but a form of overestimation. The person does not truly see themselves as small; if they did, they would be ego-less. Instead, they compare themselves to others and feel inferior. This act of comparison, which holds both the self-image and the image of the other, proves that the mind is large enough to accommodate these concepts. He uses an analogy: if someone claims their room is small but it contains an elephant, the room must be very large. Similarly, a mind filled with negativity must be vast. People who claim to have an inferiority complex actually have a very large ego; they are not inferior but excessive. Acharya Prashant further explains that the lack of willpower, or 'Sankalp,' stems from this false foundation. He distinguishes between ordinary imagination ('kalp') and true resolution ('Sankalp'). A true resolution is directed towards the Truth, which is unimaginable. To have real willpower, one must first recognize their own falsehood. When one sees their own falsehood, the resolution to move towards Truth becomes meaningful and will be fulfilled. Our resolutions often fail because they arise from a center of falsehood. Only a resolution against falsehood, born from seeing that falsehood, can be fulfilled. The ego is the central element of life, and its unhealthy expansion is the root of the problem. Becoming ego-less is the way to access the infinite Self.
