Description

Acharya Prashant responds to a question about a story from the Yoga Vasistha, where Shri Ram states that one who has knowledge also has ignorance, and one who experiences light also experiences darkness. The questioner asks if the knowledge of Brahman (Brahma-gyan) is not about rising above ignorance. Acharya Prashant explains that wherever there is knowledge, ignorance will also remain. Knowledge is always dualistic. Therefore, when you say someone is a knower of Brahman (Brahma-gyani), it is nothing but wordplay. There is no knowledge of Brahman. Knowledge always belongs to a knower, and knowledge is a slightly separate object from the knower. That is why the triad of knowledge (gyan), knower (gyani), and the known (gyeya) exists. As long as these three exist, how can there be completeness? Knowledge can never be complete. There is no experience of Brahman. Shri Ram is absolutely right in saying that where there is knowledge, there will also be ignorance. If you experience light, you will also experience darkness. If you know some things, you will also be ignorant of other things. Therefore, those who feel they have attained the knowledge of Brahman should be extremely cautious. All spiritual experiences are dualistic, worldly, and games of the mind; they have no connection with the Truth. The Truth cannot be experienced. The Truth is the light in which all experiences are illuminated. The matter is very simple. Truth is light. Bathed in that light, every object is seen clearly by another object. If you ask Shri Krishna, he will say that even consciousness is inert and natural. Truth is the light in which all objects can establish a correct relationship with each other. Truth is not an object. Experience is only of objects. You will never experience light. If you say you are experiencing light in this room, it is because you are seeing things. No one has ever seen light; we have only seen things in the light. If there is nothing to be seen, the place, despite being intensely illuminated, will appear dark. The space between the sun and the earth is black because there is nothing there to be seen. Light is never seen; only objects are seen. Similarly, Truth can never be experienced because experience is only of objects. Do not seek spiritual experiences. People talk about having a two-minute experience of death, their soul wandering around, and then returning to the body. These are all absurd talks that circulate in spiritual circles. These things happen because we have no connection with the Vedas and Vedanta. We have never honestly studied the highest scriptures. So we start talking about this experience and that knowledge. All experiences are on one level, and no experience is complete. We cannot even see this pillar from 360 degrees, so how will we see the Truth? The ego gets great pleasure in making such claims, like 'I had a vision.'
