He uses the analogy of a fat person whose body is a result of habits. If this person must run daily for a very important reason, not just to lose weight, their body will adapt, and the fat will shed on its own as it is a hindrance. Habits are shed when one dedicates oneself to a larger goal. He contrasts two approaches. One is running just to lose weight, where the highest achievement is a fat-free body. The other is to have a goal so great that you don't even notice the fat is gone. This requires 'dhriti' (fortitude), a kind of stubbornness to achieve something. When you pursue a great goal, you don't care about blisters or weight loss. He criticizes those who are proud of their disciplined, 'sattvic' (pure) lifestyle but lack a higher purpose. Their life's achievement becomes just these habits. He questions the purpose of having a healthy body and a calm mind if it's not used for a higher goal. When the real purpose is present in life, habits, good or bad, lose their hold. The real purpose then determines everything.
