Description

Acharya Prashant explains the relationship between the master and the disciple at two distinct levels: the real or subtle level and the gross level. At the fundamental level, only the disciple exists, represented by the restless mind that constantly moves, desires, and strives. The destination the mind seeks is the master, which is the mind's own center or essence. While the mind is desperate for this destination, it knows nothing about it and often chases worldly things that do not provide contentment. The destination is not within the domain of duality or diversity; if it were, the mind would have achieved it long ago. Therefore, the destination can only be described through negation—by stating what it is not—or through silence, as any affirmative description is merely a conceptualization by the mind. At the gross level, this relationship manifests in the world of forms and persons. The destination assumes the shape of a teacher, a book, or a situation to guide the individual. Acharya Prashant emphasizes that a teacher is not a person providing new knowledge but is a manifestation of the disciple's own essence. The teacher represents the disciple minus their conditioning. When a disciple resonates with a teacher, it is because the teacher is expressing the eternal truth already established in the disciple's heart. The teacher's role is not to add anything to the mind but to relieve the mind of its acquired layers and conditioning. To understand the master, one must first engage in self-inquiry and understand the workings of one's own mind.
